The core developers of the Ethereum (ETH) challenger Solana (SOL) are eyeing to further increase the network’s capacity with a proposed new upgrade.

In the new improvement document published on the development hosting platform GitHub, Solana developers say that the SIMD-0286 proposal will increase the network’s per-block compute limit from 60 million compute units (CU) to 100 million CU.

Compute units serve as resources needed for every transaction on the Solana network. The amount of CU spent varies depending on the complexity of the operation.

The developers unveiled the SIMD-0286 proposal in the wake of the network’s recent upgrade. SIMD-0256, which was activated earlier this week, increased the block ceiling from the previous 50 million CU to 60 million CU.

“The intention is for this to follow SIMD-0256 (as opposed to replacing). SIMD-0256 is a much more modest increase in block space. This proposal aims to increase block space more aggressively.”

The proposal to increase the limit to 100 million CU will further boost the network’s block capacity by over 65% albeit the developers say the improvement may cause unforeseen issues in infrastructure beyond the validators.

“Block limits’ primary purpose is to ensure the vast majority of network participants are able to keep up with the network… This proposal aims for a substantial increase in block limits to 100M CUs, in order to provide additional capacity to the network.”
