The Ethereum Foundation has detailed the rollout timeline and technical specifications for the upcoming Pectra network upgrade. Pectra activated on the Holesky testnet on February 24, 2025, at epoch 115968. However, a configuration glitch across client implementations including Besu, Nethermind, and go-ethereum caused an initial chain split on Holesky. Although developers issued emergency client fixes promptly, Holesky network performance remains degraded. Despite the incident, the Sepolia testnet upgrade timeline is unchanged and scheduled for epoch 222464 on March 5, 2025. Node operators utilizing Besu, go-ethereum, Nethermind, or Lodestar must upgrade their client software prior to the Sepolia fork.

Pectra brings extensive enhancements following the previous Dencun upgrade, led by account abstraction improvements under EIP-7702. This proposal lets standard externally owned accounts temporarily adopt smart contract code, enabling transaction batching, gas sponsorship by third parties, mobile hardware authentication, spending limits, and account recovery features while retaining safety protections like chain-specific delegating and revocability. Additionally, validator operations receive significant updates through EIP-7251, which raises the effective balance limit from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH to allow auto-compounding and validator consolidation. Complementary changes in EIP-7002 allow execution layer triggerable exits, while EIP-6110 reduces deposit processing delays from roughly nine hours down to 13 minutes by removing legacy proof-of-work queue waiting periods.

Data availability and layer-2 scaling are expanded through EIP-7691, which increases Ethereum's blob capacity by 50 percent, raising target blob limits from 3 to 6 per block and maximum limits from 6 to 9. To balance the heightened peer-to-peer network bandwidth requirements, EIP-7623 caps the maximum possible block size. Additional inclusions in EIP-7600 cover BLS12-381 curve precompiles, historical block hash storage, and consensus-execution layer communication updates. Ethereum developers noted that once both Sepolia and Holesky demonstrate stable operations under Pectra, an official mainnet activation epoch will be selected.
